Art By Kath Topham

Kath Topham is a Leicestershire based abstract artist whose work explores the human experience through a process emphasising repetition, pressure and unpredictability.

Working predominantly with a brayer roller or palette knife to embrace an unpredictable development of textures and forms, Kath repetitively builds up numerous layers of acrylic paint and brushes down coatings with varying degrees of pressure. It is a gradual process of forming, altering, destroying and revealing new depths of colour, texture and intricate detail. Inspired by weather-beaten surfaces and organic structures that daily captivate her, this approach to testing the limits of her chosen medium has produced a distinctive signature style characterised by intriguing textures and sculptural dimensions.

The finished works act as metaphors for the refinement of character borne out of the daily weathering of life. They are honest self-portraits, the artist’s own expressionist responses to various personal experiences. But in welcoming viewers to self-reflect, they also become multifaceted portraits, uniting individuals through shared experience.

Kath is an exhibiting artist at Left to Draw Studios in Market Harborough, a member of both the Visual Artist Association and the Harborough Artist Cluster.
