When Stories Take Flight: Helping Authors Self-Publish

Working for yourself can bring a wonderful sense of freedom, but it can also feel isolating. Many creatives spend long hours working alone without the everyday support of colleagues. March 2026 Creative of the Month, Jen Parker, knows that experience well. Through resilience, determination and creativity - while also overcoming personal challenges - she has built Fuzzy Flamingo, a self-publishing studio dedicated to helping authors bring their stories to life.
Jen supports writers in turning their manuscripts into beautiful, professional books. Her work sits at the intersection of design, production and storytelling. From editing to cover design and launch strategy, Jen helps authors navigate the practical and creative process of publishing - particularly through platforms such as Amazon KDP - while ensuring they retain full ownership of their work.

For Jen, creativity is not just about aesthetics. It is about translation: taking someone’s words - often the result of years of thought, research or imagination - and shaping them into a finished object that feels legitimate and proud on a bookshelf. Each project is different, and the creative challenge lies in honouring the author’s voice while applying professional publishing standards that allow their work to shine.
Before founding Fuzzy Flamingo in 2017, Jen built a successful career in traditional publishing. She eventually became Group Head of Production at a publishing house, managing teams across multiple imprints and overseeing the journey from manuscript to finished book. Her career had begun in design and gradually expanded into leadership and production management as her skills developed.
When Jen stepped away from that role on maternity leave, she saw an opportunity to build something different, something more transparent and author-led. Through her experience in traditional publishing, she had seen how confusing and exclusive the industry could feel to new writers. She wanted to create a space where authors could access professional publishing support without losing control of their rights or their confidence. What began as freelance production support soon grew through word of mouth into a thriving self-publishing studio.
Jen’s perspective on creativity has also been shaped by her own life experiences. Living with chronic illness and disability has influenced how she approaches design, communication and accessibility. She is passionate about removing unnecessary barriers, whether through clear typography, accessible websites, helpful publishing tools, or open conversations about the realities of the publishing world.
One of the most powerful moments in her work comes when an author holds their finished book for the first time. Many of her clients have overcome significant hurdles, such as self-doubt, disability or previous rejection. "Seeing them realise they have created something real and lasting is an extraordinary moment," Jen says.

Although much of Jen’s work connects her with authors nationally and internationally, being based in Market Harborough has brought its own rewards. Through networks such as Creative Harborough and connections with other local businesses, she has discovered a vibrant and supportive creative community.
Looking ahead, Jen hopes to continue expanding access to publishing through workshops, resources and community initiatives. Her vision is a publishing landscape that values diverse voices and encourages more people to feel that their stories are valid and worth telling. At the heart of that vision remains Fuzzy Flamingo, a studio dedicated to beautiful books, creative collaboration and a belief that every story deserves the chance to be shared.
Jen’s journey is a wonderful example of creativity, resilience and determination coming together to build something meaningful. Through Fuzzy Flamingo, she is not only helping authors realise their dreams of publishing a book, but also opening the door to a more inclusive and accessible publishing world. Everyone at Creative Harborough wishes Jen every success as she continues to grow her business, and we hope our creative community will continue to support and champion her work in the years ahead.

and her world was flipped upside down.

Her diagnosis with ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and fibromyalgia on the other side of the world meant changing her travel plans less than three months into her gap year, simultaneously ending her dream career in the police before it could even start.
Taking the reader through her year travelling around the world, her life-changing diagnosis, and the ten-year process of trying to right her world again, Jen gives tips and advice to people diagnosed with chronic illnesses and disabilities, and those around them. She openly and honestly talks about the pitfalls of working, setting up a small business as an unlikely entrepreneur and starting a family.
“Jen’s tenacity, drive and total and utter honesty in this book will have you realising your own potential. A brilliant book that will leave you inspired beyond belief.”
Holly Matthews, Self-development coach and founder of The Happy Me Project
“Ankylosing spondylitis is more common than MS and Parkinson's combined, yet many people have never heard of it. For this reason, when someone receives their diagnosis, it can feel overwhelming and isolating. By writing about her experiences, Jen is raising awareness for the condition and helping people know that they are not alone.”
Dr Dale Webb FRSA FRSPH, National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society (NASS) CEO
